Rolex Explorer II: history of an iconic adventure watch

The watch for globe-trotting raiders and adventurers

Launched in 1971, the Rolex Explorer II has become the quintessential adventurer’s watch. From the legendary 1655 "Freccione" to the bold 216570, this tool watch has supported generations of explorers, cavers, climbers, and globetrotters. Its evolution reflects Rolex's mastery of utility, durability, and understated elegance.

Origins: The Birth of a Tool Watch for Extreme Exploration

In the early 1970s, as mankind expanded its frontiers—space, sea, glaciers, caves—Rolex introduced a timepiece tailored for explorers: the Rolex Explorer II 1655. Designed for professionals facing constant darkness, like cavers and divers, it featured an additional orange GMT hand (nicknamed “Freccione”) and a 24-hour fixed bezel for distinguishing day from night.

The 39 mm case housed the reliable Caliber 1575 GMT, offering 48 hours of power reserve and COSC chronometer certification. The black dial, paired with Tritium luminescent indexes and a cyclops date lens, ensured perfect readability.

Steve McQueen and the "Freccione" Legend

This model gained legendary status after being worn by actor Steve McQueen. Though he is more often associated with the Submariner, collectors fondly call the 1655 the “Steve McQueen Explorer II”, praising its rugged yet elegant design—ideal for a "casual-business" lifestyle.

The 16570: Rolex Modernizes the Explorer II

In 1989, Rolex introduced the Explorer II 16570. Powered initially by the Caliber 3185 and later by the 3186, it offered greater accuracy and shock resistance. The 40 mm case in 904L Oystersteel featured a sapphire crystal, fixed bezel, and improved water resistance with a Triplock crown.

This new generation offered a sleeker profile, fitting discreetly under a shirt cuff—ideal for journalists and globetrotters seeking ruggedness without bulk. Its dial remained legible, and the independent GMT hand made tracking multiple time zones seamless.

The Polar Dial: A White Revelation

The white-dial variant, quickly dubbed the "Polar", offered improved readability in dim light. Referenced as 16570-001 (Tritium) and later 16570-003 (Super-Luminova), it revolutionized tool watch aesthetics, especially among professionals who valued clear contrast at dusk or dawn. Its crisp visibility helped Rolex set a trend that would ripple across the industry.

From Vintage to Maxi: The 216570 Era

Launched in 2011, the Explorer II 216570 marked a return to the Freccione’s roots. Now 42 mm in diameter, it reintroduced the iconic orange GMT hand. The 216570-0001 (white dial) and 216570-0002 (black dial) became instant staples, reaffirming the Polar’s enduring appeal.

The movement also evolved: the Caliber 3187, based on the 3185, added a blue Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock protection, and 50-hour power reserve. COSC-certified, this movement maintained excellent reliability under magnetic fields and shocks. The Twinlock crown and 100m water resistance enhanced versatility in rugged settings.

A Bracelet Made for the Field

The Oyster bracelet was refined with an Easylink extension system for fast micro-adjustments, an anti-opening mechanism, and comfort stretch. Whether worn over gear or under a sleeve, the 216570 remained as secure as it was adaptable—a favorite of journalists, pilots, and professionals across the globe.

Rolex Explorer II: An Enduring Legacy of Adventure

Through each generation—from the vintage 1655 “Freccione” to the 16570 “Polar” and today’s 216570—Rolex Explorer II models continue to embody the brand’s spirit of exploration. They offer reliability, clarity, and performance to those who dare venture beyond the ordinary.
