Rolex Precision transitional vintage ref. 6424 circa 1957
The classic Rolex of 1957, but with several distinctive features that make this model stand out: the steel case is extra thin, the vanilla-colored dial features the Rolex crown at 12 o’clock instead of a traditional hour marker, and the lugs are not pierced—a detail usually reserved for gold models at that time. The case size is 36 mm rather than the usual 34 mm, and the bracelet width between lugs is 20 mm instead of the more common 18 or 19 mm Rolex standards. Remarkably for its era, the lugs are solid. These specificities suggest that Rolex was already transitioning with this model toward what would later become the Rolex Explorer 1 and the Air-King. The watch is powered by the robust calibre 1012, featuring a double shock protection system, and its compact size allows for a screwed-down caseback, foreshadowing future Rolex models.
As early as 1956, Rolex began steering its innovation toward adventure-ready models to break away from the brand’s image of elegant salons and luxury. It was during this period that the iconic Submariner and Explorer models were developed, propelling Rolex into the spotlight—most famously worn by Sean Connery in James Bond with the legendary Rolex 6536 Submariner. True to its philosophy of evolution over revolution, Rolex introduced this change through a transitional model. The Precision 6424 represents this evolution within the traditional range, paving the way for the rugged and shock-resistant models to come.
This watch is rightly considered a highly collectible and exceptional transitional Rolex. A rare link between the classic and the professional line, it is a remarkable addition to any Rolex-focused collection.
