Rolex Submariner vintage 16800 circa 1985
This vintage Submariner, reference Rolex 16800 “mat dial four lines” from 1985, belongs to a transitional series in the Submariner line. In 1982, Rolex, building on its experience with the Sea-Dweller model and its strong reputation in the professional deep-sea diving field, decided to evolve the Submariner by incorporating the most recent material and technical innovations.
As a flagship model, the Submariner benefitted from technical advancements made in diving and Rolex's manufacturing expertise. Symbolized by the addition of a “0” to its original reference, the 1680 became the Rolex 16800. This transitional reference introduced a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a case rated for depths up to 1000 ft (300m). The indexes were painted in white on a matte black dial to enhance contrast and legibility—while eliminating the use of tritium. The result: a dial that aged better, free from the corrosive effects of radioactive material.
This automatic watch is powered by the Rolex 3035 movement with 27 jewels. It features quickset date adjustment, a stop-seconds mechanism for precise time-setting, and a KIF shock absorber system. The calibre beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 48-hour power reserve when fully wound. The movement is COSC-certified, a chronometer guarantee of precision noted at the bottom of the dial beneath the model name and depth rating. This set of inscriptions gives the watch its nickname: “Submariner Transitional Four Lines.”
Produced only between 1982 and 1986, this transitional reference was later succeeded by the “modern” Submariner reference 16610. However, the 16800 served as the basis for the Sea-Dweller “Triple Six” evolution, passing down both its movement and its matte dial with painted indexes.
This 1985 Submariner is presented in pristine collector condition. As a transitional model, its serial numbers place it squarely within the heart of its production period. It remains a highly sought-after piece in Rolex history, especially in this exceptional state of preservation.
