Vintage Rolex Explorer 1 "3-6-9" watch, reference 14270 in steel, dated 2000. A precise and very elegant 36 mm timepiece certified as a chronometer by the Geneva Observatory (COSC). Featuring a black dial adorned with large Arabic numerals at three, six, and nine o'clock — the design detail that earned it its nickname in the collector's world. This Explorer is a direct descendant of the ref. 6098 watch gifted by Rolex and worn by Sir Edmund Hillary during the historic Everest ascent on May 29, 1953. It is also the first Rolex Explorer model to be fitted with a sapphire crystal.

A distinguished collector's piece, the Explorer line was first introduced by Rolex at the end of 1952 with reference 6150, under the name "Precision", and with a 36 mm case — produced in limited numbers based on the 6098 model. In 1953, the watch was launched under reference 6350 and adopted the name Explorer. It could be specially prepared upon request for "extreme temperatures", using specific lubricating oils that ensured flawless movement performance across a temperature range of -20°C to +40°C — making it the only commercial watch at that time capable of operating in such conditions.

In 1955, Rolex introduced the famous chronometer-certified calibre 1030, which powered various models including the Rolex Precision, Submariner, and Explorer. This automatic movement offered better adjustment capabilities, improved accuracy (mainly due to its bidirectional rotor), and a more compact vertical height — allowing the Explorer case to become thinner for a more refined, city-friendly wear.

In 1961, Rolex launched the Explorer 1016, produced until 1989, which established the foundations of modern Explorers: an extendable-link bracelet later replaced in 1975 by the solid-link Oyster bracelet, a 1560 movement with Breguet overcoil operating at 19,800 vph, later evolving into the 1570 calibre with a stop-seconds function — allowing the seconds hand to be halted via the crown for precise time setting. This model was well received worldwide and even adapted for military use (notably by fighter pilots in Spain and West Germany). A small production batch was also released under the name "Space-Dweller" in an attempt to capture interest during the space race (ultimately won by the Omega Speedmaster). One Explorer 1016 version featured a white dial, foreshadowing the future white-dial Explorer II.

1989 saw the introduction of the Rolex Explorer 14270, dubbed the modern "three-six-nine": featuring a 36 mm rounded steel case, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and a black dial with high-contrast indexes — initially in tritium, then Luminova, and from 1998 onward in Super-Luminova — with white gold-rimmed, luminous "3-6-9" numerals. This refined and classic collector’s piece quickly gained popularity for its unmistakable elegance and timeless appeal.

Powered by the Rolex calibre 3000 — a mechanical self-winding movement produced from 1990 to 2001 with a bidirectional perpetual rotor. This chronometer-certified movement features 27 jewels and Microstella regulating screws, a Breguet overcoil for thermal stability, and a KIF shock protection system on the traversing balance bridge. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and includes a stop-seconds function for precision time-setting. The power reserve is approximately 42 hours. The case back and crown are both screw-down, ensuring water resistance up to 100 meters. This particular model still bears the original green Rolex caseback sticker stamped with the Rolex crown and reference number.

All links of the 904L hypoallergenic steel bracelet are included, allowing it to fit all wrist types — both male and female. The deployant clasp is adjustable and secured with a Fliplock safety system, preventing accidental opening and allowing for precise wrist adjustment. This pre-owned timepiece is in exceptional collector condition, very close to new, and comes with its original box.
