SpecificitiesCOSC-certified watch 28,800 vph, 48-hour power reserve, 10 ATM water resistance, ideal for modest wrists

Rolex Explorer watch 36 mm ref. 114270/P from 2003, full set with original box and papers — a steel timepiece for men or women with 3-6-9 dial, one of the brand’s most iconic watches. Rolex began Explorer production in late 1952 with reference 6150, an elegant and all-terrain model initially labeled “Precision,” featuring a 36 mm waterproof case. The 6150 was produced in small quantities, inspired by the earlier 6098. In 1953, reference 6350 was born — the first to carry the name Rolex Explorer.
This watch could, upon special request by its future owner, be configured for extreme temperature resistance. This unique preparation consisted of using special lubricating oils allowing the movement to operate safely across a temperature range from -20°C to +40°C. At the time, it was the only civilian-market watch capable of functioning in such a wide temperature range.
1955 marked the arrival at Rolex of the caliber 1030 movement, which would be COSC chronometer certified. The Rolex Caliber 1030 successively powered the models that became Rolex’s most legendary timepieces, including the Precision, Submariner, and Explorer. This automatic movement stood out thanks to technical innovations such as improved regulation, higher precision (mainly due to its bidirectional rotor), and a more compact height. As a result, the Explorer case could be slimmer and more comfortable to wear, helping it become one of the brand’s most beloved models — both elegant and suitable for urban life.
The 114270/P reference presented here is a direct descendant of the Explorer models from the second half of the 20th century. It features the Rolex Caliber 3130 — a robust movement with 31 jewels, self-winding and bidirectional, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve when fully wound. A watch with timeless lines, originally designed for men, it is now also widely worn by women.
