Omega Speedmaster Mark II ref. 145.014, a collectible timepiece with a manual-winding mechanical movement manufactured in 1970, built around the famous Moonwatch movement: the Omega 861 calibre with 17 jewels. A fine creation from the Bienne-based manufacture, emblematic of the Op-Art era and widely appreciated in the early seventies, notably for the tonneau shape of its case. The watch features an Omega C 861 movement.
Following the huge success and fame of the Moonwatch saga (the classic Speedmaster), Omega launched in the late 1960s a new development program meant to succeed the NASA astronauts’ Speedmaster. While highly praised by the aviation community, the original chronograph hadn’t fully achieved its initial objective: to outshine Rolex and Heuer in the automotive racing world. With the Mark II, Omega managed to overshadow Heuer, but remained a challenger to the crown-branded brand. Omega adapted the Speedmaster Mark II for professional uses by offering variants with different bezel inserts (positioned under the hardened mineral glass), each tailored to a specific field: a tachymeter scale for motorsport, a pulsometer for the medical field, and a decimal scale for finance and industry.
The Speedmaster 145.014 is equipped with the robust and reliable Omega C-861 calibre with seventeen jewels. This movement is renowned for its reliability, precision (notably its crucial role in the safe return of the Apollo XIII crew), and resistance to shocks and vibrations under any conditions. The chronograph module operates three sub-dials: a small running seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute counter on the right, and a 12-hour counter at the bottom of the dial. The black dial with tritium hour markers is fitted with baton-style hands, similar to those found on Moonwatch models. Fitted with a 20 mm stainless steel bracelet, this particular model comes with its full-length bracelet, including all adjustable links.
