Omega Speedmaster Apollo 17 “Last Man on the Moon” – a 2005 limited edition collector’s watch in near-new condition, featuring an engraved caseback commemorating the mission of E.A. Cernan, the last man to walk on the Moon on December 14, 1972, during NASA’s Apollo XVII mission. This timepiece was officially presented in 2004 with the participation of astronaut Eugene Cernan himself and Nicolas Hayek Sr. The screw-down caseback bears the mission’s logo, date, and commemorative inscription, marking what remains the last manned lunar exploration to this day (Taurus-Littrow Valley).
This watch is equipped with the renowned and robust Omega Caliber C-1861 manual-wind mechanical movement with 18 jewels, used in Moonwatch models since the NASA limited editions of 1997. The jewel count, increased from 17 jewels in the previous Caliber C-861 to 18 jewels in the C-1861, allows the chronograph (central second hand running) to be operated continuously without compromising the movement—a remarkable feature, as most vintage chronographs were not designed for continuous use.
It comes with its original stainless steel bracelet featuring adjustable links and a deployant clasp engraved with “Omega Speedmaster Professional”. The 40 mm steel case (42 mm including crown) is topped with a black tachymeter bezel with white km/h markings. The black Speedmaster moonwatch dial features three white-printed subdials and luminous baton hands. The manual chronograph is activated by the upper pusher, stopped with a second press on the same pusher, and reset via the pusher located at 4 o'clock.
The Omega Speedmaster is a record-breaking watch that has earned legendary status on the wrists of many notable figures (U.S. President Joe Biden wore one during his election; it is also worn by numerous actresses and renowned actors). A favorite among pilots and space enthusiasts, it is worn by both men and women. Its timeless design has allowed it to remain relevant for over fifty years. So beloved is this model that it outlived and outshined its supposed successors—the Speedmaster Mark II, III, and IV—introduced in the 1970s and 1980s.
This vintage collector’s timepiece is in exceptional condition, close to mint.
