Omega Speedmaster APOLLO XIV NASA MISSIONS Professional Moonwatch 3597.17.00
The flight of Apollo 14 Lands on Moon
Vintage Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch chronograph limited to 150 pieces, original 1997 Apollo 14 edition with original Omega warranty and papers set. This collector’s watch pays tribute to the NASA Apollo 14 mission, featuring astronauts Alan Shepard (from the Mercury program), Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell — marking the second lunar landing of the Apollo program. The mission followed the famous Apollo 13 flight, during which James Lovell reported to flight controllers: “Houston, we’ve had a problem,” caused by an explosion in the service module. That dramatic mission earned the Speedmaster the Snoopy Award. Apollo 14 picked up the initial objectives of Apollo 13. It was the last Apollo mission to use the lightweight lunar module design, as later missions would carry more equipment and extend lunar surface stays.
Apollo 14 — the eighth manned spaceflight of the Apollo program — had a scientific objective. The chosen landing site, the Fra Mauro crater, was selected for its geological significance. This crater, visible from Earth, is one of the Moon’s oldest formations, dating back to the early formation of Earth and its satellite. The rocks at its edge were excavated by an ancient impact, exposing deep geological layers and offering invaluable insight into the shared history of the Earth-Moon system.
The mission lasted two days and was classified as a Type H (precise landing) mission, with two extravehicular activities on the lunar surface. Given the difficulty of landing on such rugged terrain, contingency planning allowed for an extended flight time of the Lunar Module (LEM) to search for a safer site if needed. Astronauts Alan Shepard — the first Mercury astronaut to travel into space — and Edgar Dean Mitchell (also a former US Navy pilot) spent a total of eight and a half hours walking on the Moon. Meanwhile, Command Module pilot Major Stuart Roosa of the USAF remained in orbit, relaying communications and data back to Earth.
This Apollo 14 limited edition Speedmaster Professional is a 42mm hand-wound mechanical chronograph. It belongs to the first series of Speedmasters released by Omega in 1997 featuring the mission badges of NASA's Apollo program. This vintage watch comes with its original papers. Its chronograph movement is the Omega calibre 1861 with eighteen jewels. It features a stop-seconds mechanism, beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and has a 48-hour power reserve after full winding. Based on the Lemania 1873, this solid and reliable movement allows the Speedmaster to resist vibrations, while its screw-down caseback ensures protection from humidity and temperature shifts.
The dial features the official Apollo XIV mission logo on the left subdial (small seconds counter). The lower portion of the dial displays the names of the mission crew. The caseback bears the signature Speedmaster Seahorse medallion, surrounded by the inscriptions “Flight-qualified by NASA for all space missions” and “The first watch worn on the moon.”
