Breitling: the story of a legendary watch manufacture - Part 3
After the Millenium, an adventure that continues...
Since 2009, Breitling has entered a new era: in-house movements, tribute editions, high-profile collaborations, and a strategic repositioning. The Navitimer remains at the heart of this dynamic, symbolizing a reinvented legacy for aviation enthusiasts and fine watch lovers alike.
2009: the birth of the Breitling 01 caliber

In 2009, Breitling produced its first in-house caliber, the B01, within its own manufacture. This technical independence gave the brand complete creative freedom. True to its DNA, Breitling equipped its flagship model, the Navitimer, with this movement while increasing the case size by 4 mm. These models, now chronometer-certified by the COSC, solidified the Navitimer’s status as the brand’s aviation icon.
A unisex watch true to pilot spirit
While the 42 mm "vintage" versions are now considered unisex, the Navitimer continues to appeal to both men and women. Despite the rise of digital glass cockpits, this iconic timepiece remains attractive to professional pilots... and aviation aficionados. It's not uncommon to see a woman proudly wearing it on her wrist, a clear sign that she, too, belongs to the exclusive club of sky knights.
Tribute editions and a revival of icons

Continuing its revival efforts, Breitling released tribute editions like the Navitimer Pan Am and Navitimer AOPA, reconnecting with the brand’s golden age in both commercial and military aviation. The journey continues...

A strategic partnership with Tudor
In 2017, Breitling reached another milestone. Its BR01 caliber caught the attention of Tudor, Rolex’s sister brand seeking technical independence. At the Baselworld watch fair, both brands announced a technical exchange partnership: Breitling would supply the BR01 movement to Tudor, and Tudor would deliver components to Breitling. This strategic alliance could well reshape the dynamics of the ever-demanding Swiss watch industry.
Breitling today and tomorrow
With a strong presence in aviation, diving, and lifestyle, Breitling remains a major player in fine watchmaking. The brand continues to push innovation while honoring its heritage. With solid roots, iconic models, and a clear vision driven by Georges Kern, Breitling stands firm as a benchmark in today’s horological landscape.
