Breitling Aerospace chronograph produced for the 16th World Aerobatic Championship (WAC 1992) held in France at Le Havre Octeville Airfield (LFOH) in 1992. Fewer than 10 units of this model were produced, intended to be awarded to the top three winners of the Breitling Masters—a competition featuring the 25 best aerobatic pilots of the time, held during the World Championship. The Breitling Aerospace features a custom event dial with the official tricolor logo and the inscription of the XVI World Championship. The reference engraved by Breitling on the case is F56059L, differing from the standard production model.

In 1992, from July 4 to 19, the competition brought together 20 delegations. After two weeks of training—during which participants endured terrible weather and frequent flight interruptions due to heavy summer air traffic—the situation worsened with alternating downpours and wind gusts across the runway.

On Friday, July 17, the day before the event’s conclusion, weather conditions still didn’t allow the second “Free Program” event to proceed, which was required to validate the championship. The International Aerobatic Committee made the unprecedented decision to cancel the World Championship. The “Breitling Masters,” however, was maintained and became the sole valid World Aerobatic Championship event of 1992. It was won by a French pilot: Xavier Delapparent, ahead of Jurgis Kairys (Lithuania) and the Russian Nikolay Timfeev. Over 25,000 spectators attended the closing demonstration by the Patrouille de France, ending a memorable event where a Breitling watch replaced the coveted world champion’s trophy.

In addition to the WAC 1992 logo on its dial, this titanium watch features luminescent tritium-coated indices on the minute track, which have naturally aged into a warm gilt patina—also present on the hour and minute hands. The movement is the Breitling caliber 56, a quartz movement based on the ETA 988.332. It offers dual digital displays for perpetual calendar (day, date, month, year), an independently adjustable second time zone, a programmable countdown timer, and a digital stop & go chronograph. The watch also includes an alert function that can serve as an alarm.

This limited-edition chronograph generation was part of a series of watches designed under the direction of Ernest Schneider—a visionary leader and aviation enthusiast who spearheaded Breitling’s revival and realigned the brand with its aeronautical DNA (see the article on "The Renaissance of Breitling" on the "Watch Brand Stories" page). From a collector’s perspective, these early Breitling special editions have become increasingly rare and are highly sought after for their historical significance.
