In 1968, commercial aviation was entering the Jet Age in earnest. Inside the terminals of Orly-Sud, mechanical departure boards announced flights to London, Rome, New York and Beirut, while passengers discovered a new way of crossing the world. Caravelles, Boeing 707s and Douglas DC-8s were reducing travel times, yet navigation still relied on paper charts, electromechanical instruments and calculations performed by the crew. The Breitling Navitimer belongs directly to this world. Its highly detailed dial, almost comparable to a miniature instrument panel, was not conceived merely as a styling exercise: it reflects a period when a wristwatch could still support the preparation and timing of a flight.
The Breitling Navitimer was introduced in the early 1950s around an especially ambitious concept: combining a chronograph and a circular slide rule within a portable instrument. By rotating the bezel, the wearer can align the different scales to perform multiplication, division, distance or speed conversions, fuel-consumption calculations and journey-time estimates.
