Collector’s diving watch Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 1665 aka "Great White", a vintage diving watch in exceptional condition, from 1978, 5XXX series: a stunning matte dial with Tritium indexes, succeeding the RED models. These dials were initially intended for Rolex watches tested by COMEX, and the unbranded surplus was used on a few Sea-Dweller models produced afterward.
It should be noted that COMEX chose to equip its models with matte dials (as seen on the Omega Seamaster 600 Proplof, used by COMEX divers during the JANUS missions). The production of the Sea-Dweller must be understood in the context of that era, when this professional diving watch was more expensive than the Submariner and produced in smaller quantities. This explains why the unused components from the large COMEX order were repurposed for a few rare, unmarked models featuring a Bakelite bezel.
Deep-diving automatic watch, large date window without cyclops lens, matte black dial, Bakelite rotating bezel with unidirectional locking mechanism, Rolex automatic calibre 1570 with 26 jewels. This movement operates at a speed of 19,800 vibrations per hour and has a power reserve of 48 hours when fully wound. 30 ATM water-resistant steel case, 40mm diameter. Helium escape valve “Needle Head” patented on the left side of the case, screw-down crown and caseback with Rolex circular engravings and drilled lugs. Solid Oyster bracelet with Fliplock folding clasp in perfect condition.
This rare model, very pleasant to wear, stands out for its versatility—whether in formal settings, outdoors, or for nautical activities. Its vintage appearance gives it a unique charm, both traditional and extraordinary.
