Vintage Rolex watch GMT-Master II full set, ref. 16710, with original box and papers dated 2005 — a vintage model nicknamed “Coca-Cola” or sometimes “Deadpool” depending on collectors’ preferences. The reference 16710 was introduced in 1989 and production continued until late 2007, with many evolutions throughout its lifetime.
In 1989, the Rolex GMT-Master II was powered by the Rolex caliber 3185 automatic movement with 31 jewels, certified chronometer by the Geneva COSC. The watch features semi-quickset date adjustment and an independently adjustable red-arrow GMT hand for tracking a second time zone. The 40 mm case has drilled lugs and is topped with a sapphire crystal and Cyclops lens magnifying the date window. The dial bears the mention “Swiss - T<25” with tritium-enhanced hands. The Twinlock screw-down crown and caseback allow water resistance up to 100 meters. Three types of rotating bezels were available: solid black (nicknamed “Black Coffee”), red and black (“Coca-Cola”), and red and blue (“Pepsi”). Two bracelet types were offered: the Jubilee (ref. 62510) and the Oyster (ref. 78360).
In 1998, the inside of the caseback — initially engraved with the model reference (16710) — was replaced by the Rolex catalog spare part number (2180). In the following months, Rolex replaced the tritium lume with non-radioactive Luminova and added the inscription “SWISS” at the bottom of the dial under the minute track at 6 o’clock.
In 2000, new updates appeared on GMT-Master II watches starting with serial numbers beginning with “P”: a new Oyster bracelet ref. 78790A with solid end links (referred to as “solid bracelet”) and a new deployant clasp safety system (Oysterlock). The dial inscription also changed to “SWISS MADE,” indicating the use of Superluminova (more stable and long-lasting than Luminova) on the ringed indexes.
In 2002, Rolex stopped drilling the case lugs starting with serial numbers beginning with “Y,” replacing them with solid lugs. To fight counterfeiting, a micro-engraved Rolex crown was laser-etched at 6 o’clock on the lower part of the sapphire crystal. Additionally, the presentation box, outer box, and warranty certificate were updated. Watches with serial numbers starting with “Z” received a magnetic card format certificate for identification and warranty purposes. Toward the end of production, two new dials appeared featuring a different “II” typography next to the GMT-Master inscription. Around the same time (serial “M”), the caliber 3185 was replaced with caliber 3186 — 31 jewels, 50-hour power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a Parachrom hairspring offering superior resistance to shocks and extreme temperatures. The successor model, featuring a ceramic bezel, was the reference 116710LN and continued the legacy of this highly popular line.
The model presented here has a serial number beginning with “D.” It is a complete full-set, delivered with its original box and large-format paper warranty certificate, complete with watermark colors and details indicating it was initially sold by an official Rolex dealer in Spain.
