Rolex Explorer I Ref. 14270 – Pre-Owned 1997 – Tritium Dial – 36mm Case – Automatic Movement – Full Set
"It’s not the watch that makes the explorer, but it speaks volumes about the journey."
Picture yourself at daybreak, on a winding path in the Himalayas—or simply sipping coffee in a quiet Parisian café. The Rolex Explorer I 14270 is there, understated but ever-present, a faithful witness to your adventures—whether physical or personal. Born to meet the challenges of the real world, this emblematic watch doesn’t just adorn the wrist; it grounds it in a legacy of exploration, boldness, and timeless elegance.
Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the reference 1016, the 14270 ushered in a new era for the Explorer: sapphire crystal, glossy black lacquer dial, and applied white gold markers filled with tritium. The model presented here, dating from 1997, belongs to the final generation of Explorer I watches with a tritium dial, just before Rolex switched to Luminova in 1998. With its 36mm case, it maintains the historically ideal proportions in a configuration that is both refined and rugged.
The black dial, marked with the “T<25” signature at 6 o’clock, features the iconic 3-6-9 tritium hour markers, providing excellent legibility in any light. The contrast between the glossy finish and the warm patina of the tritium lends the watch an appealing, sought-after vintage character.
Technical Specifications

Water-resistant to 100 meters (10 ATM). The watch is fitted with a solid-link stainless steel Oyster bracelet and deployant clasp. This timepiece is sold full set with original box and papers.
A Watch Between Worlds
This may be Rolex’s most versatile creation. The Explorer I 14270 pairs effortlessly with a tailored suit or a rugged jacket. Whether you're heading to a mountain summit, a key meeting, or a busy urban day, this watch adapts without shouting—yet always commands respect.
Its balanced size and clean design make it a silent icon, cherished by those with a taste for substance over show. The tritium dial’s natural aging already tells a story—ready to continue with yours.
