A few moments on the wrist are enough to understand what makes this Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch “White Dial” distinctive. The silhouette is familiar, the three counters occupy their places, and the black bezel still frames time with the same graphic precision. Yet the eye lingers differently. White opens up the dial, emphasises the dark hands and gives the whole watch a luminous presence that becomes even more apparent once it leaves the display cabinet. A shirt cuff, the light on a terrace, an overcast sky: each setting subtly changes the way the lacquer receives reflections. This version provides precisely this pleasure of rediscovery. That history begins in 1957, in a world where speed was still measured with a chronograph and the tachymeter scale belonged to the language of racing circuits. Space exploration would subsequently give the Speedmaster an unexpected significance: NASA qualification in 1965, followed by its presence on Buzz Aldrin’s wrist on the Moon in July 1969. Behind the photographs that became historical landmarks lies a very practical understanding of a watch: a legible, usable instrument capable of measuring an interval independently of other equipment. Launched in March 2024, this white interpretation also draws on Omega’s space heritage. Astronaut suits and the 1969 Alaska I prototype inform its design; the Speedmaster name in red notably recalls the imposing red protective housing of that experimental project. White finds a coherent place in the manufacture’s history, while the red signature gives the dial the focal point needed to animate its restraint. All three counters remain white, preserving the continuity of the surface; their relief becomes apparent as the wrist turns. Dark applied markers and hands establish the reference points, and the lacquer gives them additional depth. Much of the model’s originality lies in this combination of light, relief and contrast. The watch remains instantly identifiable while creating a sufficiently different impression to justify a fresh encounter with the Moonwatch.

This transformation continues in the wearing experience. The 42 mm asymmetrical steel case, with its twisted lugs and alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces, retains a sculptural architecture whose lines catch the light particularly well around the white dial. Trying it on reveals how the lugs and bracelet articulation support this sporting presence. On this example, the steel bracelet visually extends the case and brings a continuity that works equally well with a casual jacket or more formal clothing. It gives the watch a different presence from a leather or rubber strap, more closely connected with the material and reflections of the case. White works with a pale shirt, navy knitwear or the warmer tones of a summer jacket. It becomes clear how a change of dial can broaden a watch’s range without disturbing what defines its character.

At the centre of this relationship is Omega calibre 3861, a movement appreciated as much for the way it is used as for its specifications. Manual winding introduces a quiet appointment with the watch: a few moments to restore its energy, feel the resistance of the crown change and rediscover the physical connection that automatic winding makes less apparent. The movement operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz, contains 26 jewels and offers approximately 50 hours of power reserve after full winding. This autonomy allows a day of rest without necessarily needing to reset the watch; a longer interruption will naturally require restarting. Hacking seconds facilitate precise synchronisation, while the absence of a date preserves the dial’s balance and simplifies resetting after time away from the wrist. For the enthusiast, winding soon becomes part of the pleasure: preparing the watch before beginning the day, much as one chooses the object that will accompany it.

This mechanical closeness is accompanied by genuine modernity. The Co-Axial escapement, silicon balance spring and resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss belong to the contemporary engineering of the 3861. Master Chronometer certification, overseen by METAS, applies to the complete watch and checks, among other things, accuracy, behaviour under magnetism, power reserve and water resistance. At the back, the sapphire caseback opens up another perspective: decorated bridges, the moving balance and the calibre’s architecture remain visible without a rotor passing across them. The pleasure then shifts in scale. On the dial side, everything makes measurement immediately understandable; on the movement side, the eye takes time to follow what makes that simplicity possible. This dual perspective is one of this Moonwatch’s most enduring attractions.

Its chronograph deserves to be used. The small seconds at nine o’clock indicate continuous running; the long central hand waits for a measurement to begin, accompanied by the 30-minute counter at three o’clock and the 12-hour counter at six o’clock. One press starts timing, another stops it, and the lower pusher returns the indications to zero once the chronograph has stopped. Following a stage of a journey, the time devoted to a precise task or the length of a walk gives these mechanisms a natural place in daily life. The fixed black aluminium tachymeter bezel preserves the Speedmaster’s motoring heritage: one kilometre covered in forty-five seconds corresponds to an average speed of 80 km/h, read directly from its scale. Its familiar “Dot over Ninety”, positioned above 90, adds a reference to earlier generations. The design thus offers several levels of appreciation: immediately attractive, genuinely functional, then rich in references for someone who takes the time to observe it.

The interest surrounding the White Dial also comes from the way it renewed desire for an already very familiar watch. Seen on Daniel Craig’s wrist in New York in November 2023, it generated curiosity before its official introduction. Its inclusion in the regular collection, rather than a limited edition, gives it a particular position: another enduring expression of the Moonwatch. Nominal water resistance of 50 metres, or 5 bar, nevertheless needs to be considered in context: any aquatic use requires verified water resistance, and the pushers must be operated out of the water. Over time, its ability to accompany different situations becomes particularly appreciable: expressive enough to give character to a simple outfit, restrained enough to feel appropriate at an appointment. A watch consulted to learn the time, then looked at for another second simply for the pleasure of its dial.
