Vintage collector’s watch — Citizen Challenge Timer “Bullhead” bi-compax with black dial and silver subdials from 1979. This model features an unusual case shape known as “Bullhead,” which was very fashionable in the seventies. With its mid-size case suitable for all wrist types, this Citizen 8110 with a 1979 flyback automatic movement was associated at launch with the Triumph Bonneville Special Vertical Twin and featured in period advertisements.
The movement is a high-quality 23-jewel Citizen mechanical calibre with automatic winding, based on the column wheel chronograph movement C-8110. It includes a flyback function, also called “retour en vol.” With a 48-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it rivals the finest calibres from top-tier manufacturers. Designed with sport in mind, Citizen promoted this model heavily within the motorsports world at the time. In the late ’70s, it was frequently seen on the wrists of bikers, fashion models, and pop stars.
Still quite affordable today, this collector’s watch is becoming increasingly rare on the vintage market. This is partly due to the ongoing vintage revival, but also because its advanced mechanical functions include a double date display, a robust chronograph feature comparable to much pricier models, and a unique look that fits any wrist. Moreover, its personality changes entirely depending on the strap: it appears refined and even studious on a black leather or alligator strap, space-age inspired with a steel bracelet, and rebellious with a "pilot" or cuff-style strap.
