Omega Speedmaster “Dark Side of the Moon” Apollo 8 — Ref. 311.92.44.30.01.001 — Black ceramic 44.25 mm — Calibre 1869 (manual) — Sapphire — 50 m — Full Set 2022

We’ll see you on the other side… When the radio falls silent during the flyover of the Moon’s far side, only the measure of time remains to navigate.

December 1968. Apollo 8 slips behind the Moon for the first time in history; in Houston, the signal is lost. A few seconds before the radio shadow, Jim Lovell says: “We’ll see you on the other side.” In that measured silence, only trust in mechanics and counted time remains. The Speedmaster Apollo 8 carries that memory: on the dial side, the lighter relief evokes the face visible from Earth; on the caseback side, the darker relief recalls the far side, the invisible portion that forced transmissions to cut out. Wearing this piece means bringing to the wrist a fragment of that audience-less orbit, where only the regularity of a calibre guided every move. Presented in 2018 for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 8, this version reinterprets the Dark Side of the Moon line (born in 2013) by returning to the Moonwatch’s manual movement, in order to slim the profile and reveal a spectacular skeletonised architecture. On the back, the official inscription “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE” engraves the moment of the loss of radio contact; on the front, the black/yellow aesthetic recalls the energy of a pioneering mission.

The 44.25 mm case in ZrO₂ ceramic alternates satin and polished surfaces; ergonomics remain contained at around 13.8 mm thick, and the watch sits naturally despite the generous diameter. The ceramic tachymeter bezel, readable at first glance, tops a skeleton dial that reveals the blackened, laser-engraved bridges — light side on the front, dark side on the back. The hands and markers receive Super-LumiNova (green luminescence); the chronograph seconds hand is yellow, as is the “Tachymètre” marking. The domed sapphire protects the whole at the front and the back, while 50 m water resistance ensures carefree urban use. On the wrist, the perforated black leather strap reveals a yellow rubber insert; the ceramic pin buckle completes the ensemble. Beneath the skeleton dial depicting the lunar surface lies calibre 1869: hand-wound, 21,600 vph, ≈48 h power reserve, three-register no-date architecture and exclusive laser finishing that depicts the Moon’s relief on bridges and mainplate. This choice of manual wind slims the watch and reconnects with the ritual of the original Moonwatch: a stop-seconds for precise setting, a clear chronograph read-out serving practical use.

By day, the black ceramic plays at absorbing light; in the evening, the cool glow of the Super-LumiNova reveals the tachymeter scale and the indexes. With a dark jacket or a technical jacket, the black/yellow two-tone gives a controlled accent; at the office, the slim case makes it easier to live with than “44.25 mm” might suggest. You choose it as an instrument of character, not as a shout. Full Set 2022: original box & papers, original strap and buckle, full check by the Mostra Workshop (rate, amplitude, deviation, water resistance). Watch ready to wear, pristine sapphires, ceramic in superb condition, operation in line with spec. (Official markers: 44.25 mm, ≈13.8 mm, 50 m, cal. 1869, ≈48 h.)
