Citizen Challenge Timer “Bullhead” collector’s watch with bi-compax Panda dial and black subdials from 1977 — a 1970s vintage timepiece with the distinctive “Bullhead” case design that was very trendy at the time. With a mid-size case suitable for all wrists, this model regained popularity after the film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", in which Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt appear — the latter wearing a gold edition of the Challenge Timer.
This high-quality Citizen mechanical movement features 23 jewels and automatic winding. Based on the C-8110 column-wheel chronograph calibre, it includes a “flyback” function (also known as retour en vol). With a 48-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it stands on par with the finest manufacture movements. Designed for sporty use, the model was heavily promoted by Citizen at launch, especially in the world of auto racing and motorsports. By the late 1970s, it was frequently photographed on the wrists of bikers and well-known rockers.
Still quite affordable today, this collector’s watch is becoming increasingly rare on the vintage market. The reasons lie both in the comeback of the 1970s aesthetic and in the fact that its advanced movement features include a double date display, a professional-level chronograph, and a bold design that suits any wrist. What’s more, this watch dramatically changes personality depending on the strap: understated and elegant with a black leather or alligator strap, Space Age with a steel bracelet, and rebellious with a “pilot” or cuff-style strap — as presented here.
