Vintage collector’s watch — Citizen Challenge Timer “Bullhead” bi-compax with silver dial and black subdials, from 1976, featuring a tachymeter scale. This collector’s model, with its unusual “Bullhead” case design, is directly inspired by the Space-Age era. With a mid-size case suitable for all wrists, this Citizen 8110 with flyback automatic movement (1979) was often associated with the AMC PACER X and the futuristic aesthetics of the 1970s. Upon its release, it appeared on the wrists of iconic figures of the era and in numerous advertisements themed around motorcycling and speed. One of the most memorable ads featured the watch with a Norton Commando motorcycle in the background, underlining its bold, speed-loving personality.

The movement is a high-quality 23-jewel Citizen mechanical automatic calibre, based on the C-8110 column-wheel chronograph movement. It includes a “flyback” function, allowing the chronograph to reset and restart instantly. With a 48-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it competes with the finest calibres from renowned manufacturers. Designed for sporty use, Citizen promoted the watch heavily within the motorsports scene. By the late 1970s, it was frequently photographed on the wrists of bikers, fashion models, and pop stars alike.

Still very affordable today, this collector’s piece is becoming increasingly rare on the vintage market — partly due to the renewed popularity of vintage styles, and also thanks to its advanced features: a double date display, a professional-grade chronograph function, and a unique look suitable for any wrist. This very distinctive watch also transforms its appearance depending on the strap: elegant and studious on an alligator or black leather strap, space-age with a steel or black NATO strap, and rebellious with a “pilot” or cuff-style strap.
