La Ronde belongs to that world and is now officially classified by Chanel within its Historic Collections.

Its name becomes almost self-explanatory when the watch is seen on the wrist. Everything begins with the circle. Where many women’s watches use roundness as a neutral form, La Ronde turns the case itself into the design. The central area devoted to telling the time is deliberately restrained, while a broad polished steel surface expands around it. The bezel becomes an aesthetic element in its own right, catching reflections and changing continuously according to light and movement. Measuring only 29 mm, the H0579 nevertheless has considerably more visual presence than its dimensions might suggest because so much of its surface is devoted to polished metal. 

The black dial deliberately concentrates information. There is no date, no seconds display and no complication introduced merely to demonstrate technical ambition. Two hands are enough. This restraint is deeply consistent with Chanel’s approach to watch design. Since the Première, the House has often preferred removing conventional watchmaking details rather than adding them, and Chanel itself describes the marker-free simplicity of the Première as an expression of freedom. La Ronde continues the same philosophy through a completely different geometry. The black centre absorbs the eye while the polished steel circle surrounding it transforms the indication of time into something almost private.

The original black waxed leather strap plays an essential role in that balance. Its polished appearance continues the dialogue between the deep black of the dial and the reflective steel of the case. Here, the movement deliberately disappears behind the concept of the watch. Quartz should therefore be understood as part of La Ronde’s design logic rather than judged against an automatic movement. It allows the watch to remain thin, accurate and immediately ready to wear. There is no mechanical power reserve or beat rate expressed in vibrations per hour; the electronic oscillator runs at 32,768 Hz and receives its energy from a battery. Its 6-jewel construction nevertheless reminds us that an analogue quartz calibre still contains a mechanical wheel train transmitting motion to the hands.

For a collector of Chanel watches, La Ronde has become particularly appealing because it remains comparatively discreet. The Première is instantly recognised and the J12 has become synonymous with Chanel’s ceramic watchmaking. La Ronde still requires explanation. It belongs to the group of historic designs rediscovered when collectors begin looking beyond the best-known references and become interested in how a House developed its visual language.
