Launched at the turn of 1999–2000, the J12 shook up luxury watchmaking by fixing high-resistance ceramic in the imagination of a watch that is both sporty and urban. In 2011, Chanel unveiled the Chromatic: the same architecture, but a titanium-infused ceramic that creates this unique metallic grey, offered in 33 mm quartz as well as 38 and 41 mm automatics. Examples from the 2010s are common on the secondary market; the J12 family was restyled in 2019 with new calibres.

The satin-grey dial, paced by the emblematic Arabic numerals, features a discreet date between four and five o’clock. The automatic movement based on the ETA 2892 (or equivalent) delivers the expected finesse and reliability, with around 42 hours of power reserve and easy servicing at any competent workshop.

At the office, the Chromatic adopts a monochrome look that pairs with midnight blues and anthracite greys; in the evening, its metallic reflections play with the light without lapsing into ostentation. It’s the watch for those who appreciate the self-evidence of a recomposed icon: a J12, yes—but with that matte, modern timbre that makes it immediately different.
