Breitling Chronomat chronograph with three registers, created for the Italian Air Force aerobatic team PAN Frecce Tricolori, 35th anniversary limited edition of 4,000 pieces, sold as a full set with box and papers. This 1985 collector's watch is notable as Breitling’s first ever limited edition for a military aerobatic team. Beyond the anecdotal, this chronograph marked the first step in Breitling’s revival under Ernest Schneider—an authentic re-engagement with aviation that revived the sleeping beauty and led to commercial and critical success.
This steel Chronomat model is powered by the Breitling Caliber 13, one of the most reliable automatic movements of its time. Based on the Valjoux/ETA 7750 (a direct descendant of the Venus 188 and the Venus 170, a key movement in Breitling’s history), it features the Quickdate function. It is a mechanical movement with 25 jewels, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, highly shock- and acceleration-resistant, and offers a power reserve of 42 hours.
A pilot’s watch par excellence, its notched rotating bezel is indexed and marked to track elapsed time during aerial navigation. The black dial features three subdials and luminous indices, adopting all the codes of military aviation watches: a small seconds register, 30-minute counter, and 12-hour totalizer. The white inscriptions enhance legibility, further supported by its anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
The dial exhibits a natural tropical patina of the tritium indices over time. Elegant and understated, the watch features a cushion-shaped case with screw-down caseback and crown, offering water resistance to 100 meters or 10 ATM. The back of the case includes limited edition markings and model reference numbers. At its center is an engraving of the Aermacchi MB-339PAN, the aerobatic aircraft used by the Frecce Tricolori team since 1982.
This generation of limited-edition watches is part of a series of chronographs that testify to Breitling’s commitment to military air forces. It marked a strategic direction for the brand led by then-president Ernest Schneider—a visionary entrepreneur and aviation enthusiast—who orchestrated Breitling’s major comeback in the 1980s and reconnected the brand with the DNA of its golden years (see the article on "The Renaissance of Breitling" on the "Watch Brand Stories" page). From a collector's standpoint, these early comeback models released by Breitling in the '90s are increasingly rare and desirable. Despite their rarity, they remain accessible and deserve close attention for their historical and testimonial value.
