Tudor Submariner 79090 full set from 1992
Hans Wilsdorf, founder of both Rolex and Tudor, had a clear goal: to be the best in every field where records are set. One of his favorite areas of innovation was scuba diving.
Tudor ventured into this field in 1954 with the launch of the Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner, the brand's first dive watch. To distinguish itself from Rolex’s Submariner, Tudor offered a more accessible price while maintaining precision, reliability, and water resistance—making it a go-to choice for professionals and military personnel.
The model presented here is a direct descendant of that original Oyster Prince Submariner: the Tudor Submariner 79090 from 1992. Water-resistant to 200 meters, it features a 40 mm stainless steel case, a black dial with luminous triangular and round hour markers, Mercedes hands, and a central seconds hand. The date is displayed through an aperture at 3 o’clock. It is powered by the ETA 2824-2 automatic mechanical movement—a more robust and precise calibre than the one found in earlier 9401 models. The movement features a decorated finish with Geneva stripes and perlage, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and includes the Incabloc Novodiac shock protection system. It also has an Etachron regulator, a stop-seconds function, and a power reserve of approximately 38 hours after full winding.
The screw-down caseback, graduated steel bezel, and screw-down crown with protective shoulders ensure enhanced water resistance. The watch comes with its original folding "Fliplock" safety clasp bracelet and original box. Although the Tudor Submariner was a popular dive watch in the 1990s, this black dial version was produced in smaller quantities than its blue-dial counterpart. As a result, this specific reference 79090 is a wise addition to any vintage Submariner collection due to its relative rarity in the collector’s market.
This watch is sold with its original Tudor guarantee certificate.
