Tudor Submariner French Navy — Ref. 94010 (9401/0) — MN 82 Blue « Snowflake » tritium dial — Blue « ghost » bezel — Production 1981 / Issue 1982
“Mine-clearance divers: where danger begins, their cool-headedness takes over, And when everything wavers, they align their movements and time obeys.”
Toulon, 1982. The quays are still cold when the demining team boards. Movements are measured, voices low. On the diver’s wrist, the MN 82 is not an accessory, it is a reference point: a matte blue dial without reflections, Snowflake hands that cut through the dim light, a “ghost” bezel whose regular click marks the descent. This watch has known the sea, the swell, the hold, briefings too early and returns too late. And yet, time has left it the grace of true instruments: a homogeneous patina, calmed tritium, faithful steel. After the career, it continued to accompany its owner, simple and sure, like a living memory of the missions accomplished. Today, it tells better than any account what a legendary watch is: born to serve, preserved to endure.
Designed for active service, the Tudor Submariner adopted from the late 1960s the « Snowflake » hands and markers to maximize legibility under water. The 94xx series — of which the 9401/0 (no date, often referenced 94010 at the turn of the 1980s) — was produced approx. from 1975 to 1983 and established itself as much in the catalogue as in the field, notably on the wrists of combat swimmers and mine-clearance divers of the French Navy. The blue livery (dial + insert) became an immediately recognizable signature. Our example, made in 1981 and assigned in 1982, belongs to the last batches delivered to the French Navy, as confirmed by the neat, deep, regulatory “MN 82” engraving.
The steel case of about 39 mm offers functional, sober proportions: drilled lugs for quickly changing the strap, a 60-minute notched bezel aged to blue “ghost” with coherent patina, a domed plexiglass crystal that brings this subtle distortion at viewing angles. The matte blue dial shows “Snowflake” tritium indexes superbly matched to the original tritium hands; the peripheral minute track remains crisp and legible. The screw-down crown ensures the safety of handling; the case back engraved MN 82 seals the military identity and the official delivery. Inside, a Tudor automatic calibre based on ETA (2776 family for the no-date versions of this period), beating at 21,600 a/h with a 47 h power reserve, reliable, repairable and designed for maintenance in real-world conditions. The original water resistance was 200 m; as a vintage watch, today one favors city waterproof use rather than technical diving.
An authentic military instrument become a daily icon, this Submariner blends function and style. In the city, its faded blue converses with a peacoat, raw denim or a white shirt. On a blue/grey NATO it retains the spirit of issue; on patinated leather it gains a discreet heritage presence. You wear it for what it is: a tool of confidence, ready to measure the day without ever imposing itself. A watch used in a military environment but preserved in exemplary fashion: dial, hands, bezel, case and movement are in exceptional condition. The “MN 82” engraving is fine and well defined, confirming authenticity and official issuance. All the components — dial, bezel, hands, movement, back — are correct for a 1981 production and consistent with a 1982 issue of a Tudor MN 9401/0. The watch comes with a Mostra luxury case. Given the age, no dive certification: city waterproof use recommended. Full inspection carried out by the Mostra Workshop before sale.
