Quite possibly the most famous Rolex watch model in the world, the Rolex Submariner stands as the most popular and most sought-after Rolex among vintage watch collectors. As an iconic piece from the brand, the Submariner 5513 was almost always included in a watch collection during the 1980s. Today, this reference is increasingly rare and steadily rising in value on the pre-owned market. Produced from 1962 to 1989, it remains one of the most beloved models in the Submariner family.
When it was manufactured in 1971, the Submariner 5513 met the highest standards of craftsmanship and finishing in the watchmaking world. As such, it was used by many professionals and military personnel (like the Rolex Mil-Sub worn by British Navy divers, and civilian models worn by professionals as shown in advertisements of the time). Sir Roger Moore, also known as James Bond 007, was among the many celebrities who wore a Rolex 5513. (See our article on the Submariner, icon of the deep, on our blog Mostra-Mag, section Watch Stories). A true emblem of the 1970s, it was during this period that Rolex watches started gaining immense popularity. The Submariner was worn by many travelers and journalists who, due to the watch’s reputation and its internationally recognized value, brought it along as a reliable asset—something they could trade or sell in case they needed a return ticket during their travels.
This vintage Rolex Submariner 5513 features a beautiful matte black two-line dial (feet first) with tritium hour markers that have developed an exceptional patina over time, known in the collector world as “split leather” or “leather crust” (the dial acquires a slightly grainy texture). At the bottom of the dial, the "Swiss - T<25" inscription indicates the use of tritium as the luminous material. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal (plexiglass dome), which enhances the dial’s presence. The unidirectional rotating bezel is indexed, and the 40mm case is in excellent condition. The steel bracelet is long and adjustable to fit wrists up to 24 cm.
The movement is automatic, reference Rolex caliber 1520 with 26 jewels, operating at 19,000 vibrations per hour, and offering a power reserve of approximately 42 hours when fully wound. The winding crown is a large model, also referred to as “big crown,” and is protected by crown guards. The lug width (with drilled lugs for easier strap removal) is 20 mm. The steel bracelet bears the reference 93150 with 580 endlinks.
From a collector’s perspective, this watch in perfectly original condition represents a must-have Rolex for men or women. Its 40 mm diameter and slim profile make it a highly wearable and comfortable timepiece. Its character reflects the refined craftsmanship of vintage production, and its exceptional condition ensures long-lasting performance. This water-resistant watch comes with a certificate of authenticity, a leather travel case, and includes a two-year warranty.
