Omega Constellation ref. 168.017 – 1966 – Steel – Caliber 561 – Chronometer Officially Certified – Steel bracelet with deployant clasp – Omega service box
“Under Geneva’s stars, precision becomes a way of life.”
On a clear night in 1966, Lake Geneva glistens like a polished watch case. In boutique windows, Swiss watchmaking showcases its promises of precision; on the wrist of a young executive, an Omega Constellation 168.017 catches the streetlights’ reflections. The seconds hand glides across the silver dial with the assurance of an instrument born for chronometry competitions, while the caseback engraving of the observatory reminds us that accuracy is not a whim it is a culture.
Launched in 1952, the Constellation has always been Omega’s flagship chronometer line. In the mid-1960s came the iconic C-shape case — a design attributed to Gérald Genta — modernizing the silhouette with flowing flanks and integrated lugs. The ref. 168.017 belongs to this “C” family (introduced in 1964) and was produced roughly between 1966 and 1971. Surviving examples are documented from 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971, placing this particular piece firmly at the very beginning of the production run. On the back, the Geneva Observatory medallion surrounded by eight stars celebrates two world records and six first-place awards won by Omega at international chronometry trials between 1933 and 1952. Historical note: the “Officially Certified” wording on the dial refers to the official chronometer testing standards of the era (observatories/official bureaux). The modern COSC organization as we know it today was only established in 1973.
The steel case adopts the C-shape silhouette with continuous sides and integrated lugs, giving it an elegant presence of about 35 mm in diameter, ~40 mm lug-to-lug, ~11 mm thick, and 19 mm between lugs — proportions ideal for city wear. The silver dial bears, beneath the applied Ω and OMEGA wordmark in steel, the inscription “Automatic Chronometer Officially Certified”; at 6 o’clock, the Constellation script is accompanied by its polished star emblem. The date aperture at 3 o’clock ensures daily practicality. The screw-down caseback carries the famous observatory and stars medallion. The watch is fitted with a period-correct hesalite crystal and a steel bracelet ending in a deployant clasp for secure, comfortable wear.
Inside beats Omega’s caliber 561 automatic movement, with 24 jewels, running at 19,800 vibrations/hour and offering about 50 hours of power reserve. Adjusted to the chronometer standards of its time, it stands among the finest of Omega’s 5xx series movements, renowned for stable timekeeping and robust construction. Later in the production run, the 168.017 would also be seen with the caliber 564 featuring quickset date; this 1966 example retains the original 561, true to the earliest batches.
Primarily a dress watch, the C-shape Constellation carries a natural versatility: discreet under a formal shirt cuff by day, effortlessly elegant with a blazer at night, and equally at home with a casual vintage-inspired outfit. The silver dial and refined markers slide easily into any wardrobe, while the steel bracelet adds a durable, contemporary touch.
Every piece is inspected by our watchmaker, authenticated, and delivered with an Omega service box.
