Blancpain Rayville represents a pivotal era in Blancpain's history, characterized by major innovations in diving watches. Following internal restructuring in the 1930s, the renowned Swiss manufacture established Rayville S.A. to continue watchmaking under this new identity. This entity quickly became a leading player in developing military watches, notably with the launch in 1953 of the legendary Fifty Fathoms, designed specifically at the request of French Navy combat swimmers.

This revolutionary timepiece, created in collaboration with Commander Robert Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud, introduced several elements that became standard in diving watches: a unidirectional bezel, water resistance to 50 fathoms (approximately 91 meters), and a highly readable dial with luminous indexes. Adopted by numerous naval forces around the globe, the Fifty Fathoms quickly became the benchmark for professional and military diving watches, competing directly with contemporary models such as the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, and Panerai dive watches.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Blancpain Rayville continued to innovate with specialized models like the Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC, featuring a moisture indicator on the dial to warn divers of potential leaks, or the famous No Radiation version, designed to assure divers about the absence of radium. Other coveted models like the Barakuda or the exceptionally rare Tornek-Rayville TR-900, made exclusively for the U.S. Navy, are now among the most sought-after vintage dive watches on the collector's market.

In parallel with dive watches, Blancpain Rayville also produced timepieces tailored for aviation and special forces, reinforcing its reputation as a manufacturer of professional instruments. However, the quartz crisis of the 1970s led to a dramatic downturn for many Swiss watchmakers, and Rayville ceased operations, overtaken by inexpensive electronic watches from Asia.

It wasn't until the 1980s that the brand reclaimed its historical prestige when Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet revived Blancpain, emphasizing the preservation of its mechanical heritage. Since then, the Fifty Fathoms has been frequently reissued, with contemporary models paying homage to original Rayville-era creations while incorporating modern technical advancements.

At Mostra Store, our carefully curated pre-owned Blancpain Rayville watches are highly prized for their history, rarity, and direct connection to the origins of modern diving watchmaking.
