Founded in 1860 by Édouard Heuer in Saint-Imier, Heuer quickly established itself as a pioneer in the field of chronographs. In 1882, the brand filed its first patent for a chronograph mechanism, followed by the invention of the iconic oscillating pinion in 1887 — a component still used in many modern movements. This technical breakthrough helped solidify Heuer's reputation for precision and innovation.
During the first half of the 20th century, Heuer specialized in timekeeping instruments for sport and industry, before forging close ties with the world of motorsport in the 1950s and 1960s. This historic partnership led to the launch of the Carrera in 1963 — an iconic chronograph designed for race drivers and inspired by the legendary Carrera Panamericana rally. Its clean design, superb legibility, and sturdy construction quickly made it a cult classic.
In 1969, Heuer continued to push boundaries with the release of the Monaco, the first waterproof automatic chronograph with a square case. Equipped with the groundbreaking Chronomatic Caliber 11, the Monaco gained international fame when worn by Steve McQueen in the 1971 film “Le Mans,” permanently cementing Heuer's connection to motorsport. Meanwhile, the Autavia model — highly popular among professional drivers — became one of the most technical and functional chronographs of its era.
At the same time, Heuer became the first watch brand to sponsor a Formula 1 driver — Jo Siffert — pioneering a marketing approach that would shape the industry. These innovations helped bring Heuer to a wider audience and reinforced its sporty, performance-driven image. However, despite its success, the brand was hit hard by the quartz crisis of the 1970s. In 1985, Heuer was acquired by TAG (Techniques d'Avant-Garde) and became TAG Heuer, ushering in a new era of modernization and global expansion.
Today, Heuer — now TAG Heuer — continues to produce faithful reissues of its legendary models while incorporating cutting-edge technology. The Carrera and Monaco collections remain timeless icons, especially the references associated with McQueen and Siffert, and are highly sought-after on the pre-owned market. Their historical and aesthetic significance makes them prized collector's pieces around the world.
