Sometimes twenty years must pass before we look differently at a watch we thought we knew. With the Rolex Submariner Date 16610, time has revealed what familiarity had made almost invisible: the rightness of the proportions, the slender lugs, the restraint of an aluminium bezel and that presence on the wrist which enthusiasts of five-digit Rolex references recognise immediately. This continuity can first be read in the case. Its 40 mm of 904L steel create a watch whose presence owes as much to its design as to its diameter: relatively slender lugs, restrained crown guards, polished sides and satin-finished surfaces that give the steel several ways of catching the light. Beneath a shirt cuff, this geometry retains a welcome ease; with a lightweight jacket or on an uncovered wrist, it immediately recovers its sporting character. The Super-LumiNova associated with this period releases in darkness the light previously absorbed, with an intensity that gradually diminishes. At three o’clock, the Cyclops magnifies the date, that indication consulted almost unconsciously while travelling or during a working day. Around it, the unidirectional bezel, graduated over sixty minutes, retains its full purpose. Align its marker with the minute hand and elapsed time becomes immediately visible; an accidental rotation in its permitted direction can only increase the duration displayed. This gesture also has its place on land for tracking a wait or a stage of a journey. Finally, the aluminium insert brings its own material character and distinctive reflection, more discreet than the shine of ceramic. It contributes fully to the personality of this generation, while requiring greater care against scratches.

Beneath the Oyster caseback, Rolex calibre 3135 gives this apparent simplicity its mechanical depth. This chronometer-certified automatic movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz, contains 31 jewels and offers approximately 48 hours of power reserve after full winding. A Microstella-regulated balance, a full balance bridge and bidirectional automatic winding reflect an architecture attentive to stability and servicing. In daily use, the rotor maintains the energy reserve through the wearer’s activity, hacking seconds allow precise synchronisation and the quick-set date makes restarting the watch after a few days of rest straightforward. Autonomy amounts to approximately two days when the mainspring is fully wound; a longer interruption will therefore require winding and resetting. The 3135 thus provides access to a movement characteristic of its period, whose architecture deserves the watchmaker’s attention, while retaining the ease of an everyday watch. Its longevity naturally remains linked to the quality of its maintenance: a calibre’s robustness is preserved at the workbench

The Submariner’s maritime vocation remains present in every detail of its construction, beginning with the screw-down Triplock crown, screwed caseback and sapphire crystal. Its nominal water resistance of 300 metres expresses the reference’s original specification; on a pre-owned watch, aquatic use always depends on a recent water-resistance test and the condition of the sealing components. This precaution is part of the normal life of a mechanical diving watch. A correctly screwed-down crown, regular maintenance and rinsing with fresh water after use at sea are the practices that allow its function to be approached responsibly. Yet the pleasure of a 16610 extends well beyond this setting: a weekend on the coast, a working day and a more formally dressed evening suit it equally well. Its steel, black dial and restrained design give it the stylistic versatility appreciated when travelling with a single watch. Legibility becomes comfort, resistance becomes reassurance and a properly adjusted bracelet eventually disappears from awareness.
