This 31-jewel movement operates at the speed of 28800 vibrations per hour and, completely wound, gives the watch a reserve of operation while resting for fifty hours—no need to wind it up after a long period of sleep during stopovers. Of course, the movement retains the characteristics available on the previous model: the ability to drive the date disc in semi-fast mode (slaved to the Mercedes local hour hand) and drive over a cycle of twenty-four o'clock of the red arrow hand. It would indicate a different time zone, this being the origin of the GMT surname of the model.
In 2006, Rolex will fully develop the movement of the Rolex GMT master 2 16710 watches in its production units and, on this occasion, allow it to pass the COSC chronometer certification with a new movement, with the same characteristics but renamed Rolex calibre 3186 on this occasion. The self-winding Rolex 3186 movement is also equipped with a Parachrom hairspring, giving it excellent resistance to temperature variations and shocks.
