The history of the Eterna-Matic Super KonTiki watch: a legend of horology and adventure
...To push the limits of what's possible
The Eterna-Matic Super KonTiki, born in the 1950s, is one of the most iconic Swiss dive watches. Inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki expedition, it blends robustness, precision, and timeless design. From its first generation to today’s models, it remains a symbol of adventure and watchmaking excellence, cherished by divers and collectors alike.
A watch born from the spirit of adventure

The Eterna-Matic Super KonTiki is an iconic model that embodies Swiss watchmaking excellence and the constant drive to push the boundaries of nautical sports watches. First launched in the 1950s, it is the product of Eterna’s innovation and expertise, a watchmaking house founded in 1856. The Super KonTiki is renowned for its robust design and reliable performance, making it a favorite among adventurers and diving enthusiasts.
The name comes from the 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition led by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. This daring mission aimed to cross the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft to prove that ancient peoples could have traveled from South America to Polynesia. Inspired by this spirit of exploration, Eterna created the Super KonTiki to meet the demands of modern adventurers.
Technical features and design
The Super KonTiki is equipped with an automatic Eterna-Matic movement, celebrated for its precision and reliability. Its stainless steel case offers outstanding resistance to corrosion and shocks. With water resistance up to 200 meters, it is perfectly suited for activities ranging from sailing and swimming to scuba diving.
The dial is luminescent and highly legible in all environments, with hands and indices that ensure optimal visibility even in low-light conditions. Most models feature a unidirectional rotating bezel, essential for divers to track elapsed time underwater. The strap, available in stainless steel or rubber, is designed for both comfort and durability.
The origins of the KonTiki
Eterna, founded in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Josef Girard and Urs Schild, has built a reputation for innovation and exceptional quality. The first Eterna KonTiki, launched in 1958, was powered by the Eterna-Matic 1414UD caliber and featured a glossy black dial with luminescent radium triangles. Although not specifically designed for diving, it offered water resistance up to 20 atmospheres.
The generations of the Super KonTiki

First generation: Reference 130 IPT
Introduced in 1960, the first Super KonTiki focused on water resistance and featured an external bezel. Bezel options included an immersion time version inspired by Jacques Cousteau’s book “The Diving.” These watches were often paired with a Gay Frères stainless steel bracelet. Eterna’s movements were known for their durability, with owners praising their long-lasting precision.
Second generation: 130 PTX
Launched around 1962–1963, this version had a redesigned, larger, and thicker case with twisted lugs. It retained its striking dial features and offered the same “The Diving” bezel options.
Third generation: 130 FTP and 130 FTT
Debuting in 1967, these references cemented Eterna’s reputation as a maker of robust and elegant tool watches, designed for both professional divers and style-conscious adventurers.
A timeless watchmaking icon
Over the decades, the Eterna-Matic Super KonTiki has become a benchmark in the world of dive watches. It has inspired numerous contemporary models and remains highly sought after for its blend of style, toughness, and functionality. More than just a vintage timepiece, it stands as a 1960s tribute to adventure and horological performance, continuing to inspire those who dare to explore the world.
